There are several new shops in Nashville selling CBD oil, edibles and other products. CBD is the common abbreviation for cannibidiol, a cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant.
So, what, exactly, is CBD oil?
Here are five things to know.
1. CBD is not the same as THC.
THC is the primary agent responsible for the “high” associated with recreational marijuana use. CBD oils and products do not produce the same effect. Educating people about CBD is what drives Daniel O’Rourke and Austin Davis. O’Rourke opened Nashville CBD Solutions in Green Hills in August.
Davis, the manager, has a unique understanding of CBD and its applications. She was the lead researcher in the governor’s office in Colorado when that state rolled out its medicinal and recreational marijuana initiatives.
“There’s so much misinformation ... that I just want people that walk in the store to know absolutely what they’re taking, what’s in it, how to use it, and how it’s going to help them,” Davis said.
2. Not all CBD oils are created equally
Nashville CBD Solutions only sells products from companies that use a CO2 extraction method, which O’Rourke and Davis say is the safest process. “You basically use CO2 to compress the raw hemp flower into a distilled CBD or hemp oil and, then you mix that with a subsequent carrier oil. We most often see MCT oil, which is coconut oil, mixed with CBD oil or sunflower seed oil,” Davis said.
Other extraction methods involve ethanol or acetone, which Davis and O’Rourke advise against.
3. One size doesn’t fit all
Everyone’s starting point is different. O’Rourke and his staff do a consultation with each customer to find the best product for that person.
4. It’s popular among the 55+ crowd
People 55 and older make up a large part of Nashville CBD Solutions’ customer base, particularly those suffering from arthritis or achy joints. The most popular uses for CBD oil are relief from pain and anxiety, and as a sleep aid.
Both O’Rourke and Davis swear by CBD oil: O’Rourke for back pain and Davis for the lasting painful effects of a broken ankle years ago. “I believe in the product. I believe in what it can do for people,” said O’Rourke.
5. Even your four-legged friend may benefit
“We’re all mammals,” Davis said. “All mammals have an endocannabinoid system. We have an oil for pets, as well as treats and a pet shampoo and spray mixed with CBD, if there’s any sort of skin irritant or inflammation, similar to the topicals for humans.”
Davis said CBD oil can help cats and dogs with hip issues, arthritis, anxiety and hyperactivity. Best of all, the oil is bacon flavored. Davis recommends putting a drop on your pet’s food or treat.
