cell phone

A new state law went into effect this year makes it unlawful to use a cell phone in an active school zone, such as in the morning or afternoon when lights are flashing.

The law, which includes texting, talking and general use, makes it a misdemeanor to use hand-held mobile phones and could result in a $50 ticket and court fees.

School bus operators are prohibited from using cell phones while driving if passengers are present.

For drivers under 18, cell phone use is prohibited while driving anywhere. In July 2009, it became illegal to text and drive in Tennessee.
